El libro es una compilación de artículos del historiador José Chaupis, sobre uno de los personajes más polémicos de la historia política peruana, Nicolás de Piérola, El Califa. Amado y odiado por la historiografía nacional, es un personaje del que se ha escrito mucho respecto de su personalidad, su labor como funcionario de gobierno, su gestión presidencial y su accionar antes, durante y después de la Guerra del Pacífico. No obstante, la valoración y análisis de su accionar dentro de la política peruana aún está en ciernes.
