This paper intends to understand, through a qualitative and ethnographic approach, the political and religious uses of the new information and communication technologies (or new ICTs) in the community of Yanque (Caylloma, Arequipa, Peru), finding that the Internet and cell phone, far from disintegrating the community, are used as means to preserve the traditions of their local culture, but they are also used as tools to reinforce the status and prestige of the power groups, and, therefore, to reaffirm the hierarchies and inequalities within the stratified social field of Yanque.Downloads
