La historia del cine peruano se remonta a 1898, cuando en Lima se da a conocer el Quinetoscopio Edison, aparato que proyectaba películas de corto metraje tomadas al aire libre (“El arte de la pantalla”, 1922). Cuatro años antes, el 19 de noviembre de 1894, María Jesús Wiesse Romero nacía en Lima, en el seno de una familia con un especial interés por el tema educativo, su abuelo, Karl Wiesse fundó una escuela en Tacna. En tanto, su padre Carlos Wiesse, luego de ingresar a la Universidad de San Marcos, incursionó en el periodismo y la enseñanza hasta que fue nombrado abogado de la Peruvian Corporation, cargo por el cual radicó con su familia en Europa (Wiesse, 2014, 14-17).
