La investigación de Montoya propone reconstruir la primera etapa de la vida y, sobre todo, la obra de Aníbal Quijano desde la multiplicidad de las disciplinas científico sociales, esto a partir de que Quijano no solo se basó en la sociología como corriente única de sus estudios, sino por el contrario, gravitó por todas las ramas posibles para desarrollar su pensamiento crítico latinoamericano. Su estudio epistemológico se convierte entonces en un tema a abordar a profundidad y, como una tarea pendiente, debido a la importancia científica de este gran pensador peruano.
