Quipus as a communication and registration system were an instrument that indigenous ingenuity created to express issues of various kinds since pre-Hispanic times. Such a system consists of knots tied to strings to record certain events of the daily or administrative life of the native peoples. The objective of this article is to contribute with new elements to the understanding of the use of the quipus for the ideological domination of the native ayllus in colonial times. For that purpose, we comment on the Instructions provided by the Mercedarian Father Diego de Porras.
