Hasta hace algunos años, la historiografía de la independencia del Perú se caracterizó por la falta de estudios que, dejando de lado la exaltación patriótica, aborden la participación indígena durante la guerra, tomando en cuenta sus intenciones o motivaciones políticas, y, sobre todo, por la ausencia de una interpretación que intentase comprender esta participación. En tal sentido, el libro escrito por el historiador Gustavo Montoya, se aproxima a la independencia desde una nueva perspectiva; no desde las decisiones políticas de las élites criollas, sino desde las que tomaron los indígenas en la guerra.
