Abstract

In Lima, in the mid-19th century, citizenship was conditioned and restricted for a select minority that justified their rights with privileges. In this context of inequality, the popular sectors of Lima, lacking assets and large incomes, assimilated liberalism and adapted it to their living conditions to exercise their citizenship. The objective is to demonstrate how the popular sectors of Lima, through a trade or work, exercise their citizenship. To do this, testimonies from intellectuals and travelers of the time, journalistic articles and documents from the Historical Archive of the Municipality of Lima will be analyzed that explain the way in which street vending generated honor and social recognition for the exercise of citizenship.
