Abstract

The article deals with Haya de la Torre’s first book, Por la emancipación de América Latina. Its publication in May 1927 was linked to the project of an armed insurrection in Peru that would initiate the continental revolution. It was a doctrinal guide to direct the revolution, with a reading of the past and present and a proposal for the future (an autochthonous and autonomous road to socialism). It was also a discursive means aimed at constituting an immediate reality: a “party/united front”, with disciplined militants ready for armed action, a periphery of sympathizers and intellectuals to govern and a scientific messianic leadership, that of Haya de la Torre. As this discourse became more concrete, it collided with the proposals of José Carlos Mariátegui -a leader of great prestige-, and thus the book, despite being useful for the gestation and foundations of the aprista movement, lost meaning.
