Abstract

In this paper we compare insights on the Lambayeque economy in two conjunctures: 1793 y 1804, which were advanced in the writings of José Ignacio de Lecuanda, a viceregal bureaucrat, y Pedro de Estella y Suazo, a merchant and delegate of the Royal Consulate of Lima. On that basis we examine the characteristics of trade in the province in the decades before the Independence. We emphasize that these authors viewed local economic agents as part of a class order defined by ethnic adscription. Also we remark that they paid special attention to the domestic unit and to the patriarchal dependence of women, as elements of the indigenous economy.
