An idolatry trial from 1647-1648 is reexamined here for comparative study of the functioning and social dimension of Andean colonial ecclesiastical law and Andean colonial law itself. In this trial Jerónimo Auquinivin, an Andean chief or kuraka supported by the Spaniards acusated five Andean old ‘sorcerers’ in an effort to redirect the attention of ecclesiastical authorities from his own ‘idolatrical’ practices. Finally I offer some reflections about continuities in the use of courts for processing social contradictions in Peru as a ‘premodern’ nation.Downloads
