Antes de la llegada de los conquistadores incas, existía ya en la región de Cajamarca un estado importante. La arqueología –tanto la cerámica como las ruinas de antiguas poblaciones– evidencia una época de gran posteridad en el valle. Al cesar casi violentamente la influencia wari, alrededor del siglo XII de nuestra era, sobre la base de las antiguas tradiciones locales, aparece una nueva tradición alfarera que se extiende rápidamente y que Reichlen ha denominado Cajamarca V. Se trata de una cerámica típica, de pasta blanquecina, beige clara, áspera, de aspecto granuloso y en la que se notan, repartidos desigualmente, numerosos gránulos como áreas de influencia de este estilo el territorio comprendido por las actuales provincias de Huamachuco, Cajabamba, Contumazá, Cajamarca, Bambamarca y Santa Cruz.Downloads
