Abstract

This article presents the results of research (systematic excavations and surveys) at the Marcajirca site (1000-1500 AD) in the Ancash highlands with emphasis on the study of ceremonial architecture. During our work we have identified four ceremonial buildings (altars, ushnus, torreón and amphitheater) distributed throughout the settlement. Its location and surrounding space suggest a diversity of ceremonies practiced. These ceremonies vary in the degree of gathering of people, the frequency with which they are practiced and shed light on who could lead these ceremonies. This study proposes a multiplicity of rituals and the nature of them, whose purposes vary between shamanism or healing, fertility, agricultural new year, dances, and coca chewings, cult of the dead and veneration of ancestors.
