El volumen incluye ponencias presentadas en el Simposio "El Niño 1997-98", desarrollado dentro del IV Congreso Latinoamericano de Ecología y 11 Congreso Peruano de Ecología (Arequipa, 1998). Este Simposio fue organizado por el Proyecto "Monitoreo del Impacto Biológico del Fenómeno 'El Niño' sobre los Recursos de la Costa y Áreas Marinas Someras del Perú", en el que participaron más de 15 instituciones científicas peruanas, bajo la coordinación del CONCYTEC. Este volumen extraordinario tuvo el apoyo económico de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) y del Instituto Alfred Wegener de Investigaciones Marinas y Polares de Alemania (AWI),
